A Golden Fish
The Golden Mahseer, Tor putitora, is a large migratory fish that makes its home in the rivers of the Himalayan region, within the river basins of the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra.
Golden Mahseer are considered one of the flagship species for conservation throughout its range and are highly valued as cultural icons and as prized sportfish within the recreational angling community.
The Concerns
Alteration and degradation of critical habitats for any fish will compromise their ability to thrive, and this is especially true for migratory fish like Mahseer with their seasonal movements throughout a river.
For many Mahseer rivers, large scale development, such as hydropower and sandmining, impede migratory routes, while illegal harvest removes adult fish at unsustainable levels.
The Needs
Although the threats to Mahseer populations are multi-faceted, it comes down to two main actions: protect the fish and protect their habitat.
Meeting these needs will require a high-level of communication, cooperation, and coordination among stakeholders so that the needs of human development are balanced with the benefits of protecting river ecosystems and the fish they support.
