Recreational Fishing Program

Golden mahseer are among the world’s exotic catches for an angler and is a highly sought-after game fish by the recreational fishing community, yet, without special permission, recreational angling was not allowed by visitors in Bhutan. That has now changed, with amended fishing regulations that are based on a catch-and-release fishery. This new program can now help generate revenue for local communities and support conservation actions for Golden mahseer and the other target sportfish.

Imagine the challenges that Bhutan faces as they begin a whole new industry. In 2022, there was not a place to even buy a fishing rod in country. In addition, most people have not grown up with the concept of fishing for fun or the idea of catch-and-release fishing.

FCF is currently assisting Bhutan in developing this industry through a variety of activities, including guide training support, best handling practices education, providing fishing gear, and assessing angling opportunities for fly-fishing excursions.
