Communications Training
Natural resource scientists receive extensive education and training to address the requirements of fish and wildlife management. While many job duties are an extension of this training (including experiment design, data collection and analysis, etc.), another important aspect of their work involves communicating with constituents and the general public about management decisions, conservation issues, regulations, and the importance of compliance.
Despite the importance of making fisheries science understandable to broader audiences, surprisingly little attention has been given to effective communication strategies.
To help fill that gap, the Fisheries Conservation Foundation has established a partnership with the American Fisheries Society and Exact Communications to bring together a team of science communication specialists. The core team of Julie Claussen, Carolyn Hall, Dr. Katie O’ Reilly, and Drue Winters have developed a training program focused on providing practical skills for fisheries professionals.
The team’s approach is a holistic one, addressing the full spectrum of communication skills — from developing strong narratives, presentations, and visuals to specialized training in policy and media engagement. Grounded in the latest research on science communication, the program’s interactive sessions equip fisheries scientists with the tools to communicate more effectively with thought leaders, journalists, stakeholders, and the public.
