Stefan Lovgren

Journalist

Stefan Lovgren is a journalist with 30 years of experience reporting from around the world. He is a research faculty associate at the University of Nevada, Reno, with the Tahoe Institute for Sustainability. Stefan shares his passion for freshwater ecosystems, environmental storytelling, and the pursuit of knowledge that shapes his impactful journalism and literary works.  He has reported on rivers and lakes across the globe, and his work has appeared in National Geographic, Scientific American, Yale E360, Mongabay, and The Guardian. Stefan is the co-author of “Chasing Giants: In Search of the World’s Largest Freshwater Fish” (with FCF Advisory Council Member Zeb Hogan). Most recently, Stefan has founded Freshwater Frontlines, a journalism initiative dedicated to amplifying voices from the world’s rivers, wetlands, and lakes. The project connects local realities with global debates, aiming to bring freshwater issues into sharper focus for policymakers and the public.
