Forgotten Fishes of the Mekong

Congratulations to WWF and 25 local, regional, and global Mekong-based organizations on the new report Mekong’s Forgotten Fishes.  The report, following in the footsteps of the “World’s Forgotten Fish” report, details the extraordinary variety of fish species in the Mekong river.

The Mekong River, renowned as the 3rd most biodiverse river on Earth, boasts the largest inland fishery on the planet, playing a crucial role in sustaining the food security and livelihoods of over 40 million people. Its diverse range of fish species not only serve as a vital source of sustenance but also support local economies through fishing-related activities. Moreover, the river’s thriving ecosystem relies on the presence of these fish, which contribute to the overall balance and health of the surrounding environment.

Mekong's Forgotten Fishes report coverDespite the importance of this river, the Mekong is facing a grave ecological crisis. The plight of its Forgotten Fishes, whose populations are rapidly dwindling, demands immediate attention. According to a recent report, an alarming 19% of these fish species are already on the brink of extinction. Preserving a thriving Mekong River teeming with fish is not only vital for the well-being of local communities, but also for the economies and ecosystems dependent on it. The time has come for urgent action to secure a brighter future for this invaluable natural resource.
